Square Meal Review of The Black Swan ?

Don’t mistake this handsome 16th-century pub-with-rooms out in the sticks for a bog-standard country boozer – even though it still has a rustic flagstoned bar with open fires, ‘Mouseman’ furniture, pints of Copper Dragon on tap and lovely views of the rolling Yorkshire Wolds from the garden (maps and guides are provided if you fancy a walk). The serious business takes place upstairs in the Michelin-starred dining room, which offers a challenging menu that would not be out of place in a big-city eatery. You might start with a trendy plate of tuna tartare with wasabi, ginger, lime and coriander, move on to Hebridean lamb loin and shoulder with boulangère potatoes, white onion and salsa verde, and finish with a combo of rice pudding, roast pineapple and pecans. There’s also a seven-course tasting menu for those who want to push the boat out.

  1. For us, Christmas in North Yorkshire could only mean one thing, another self-indulgent lunch at The Black Swan. It had a lot in common with our trip there last year; the weather was terrible and the meal was satisfying. Since our last visit, there have been a few changes up there. Tommy Banks has taken over from Adam Jackson as head chef, making it a real family business. His brother James heads up front of house and their parents own the place. They’ve also just been promoted to 3 AA rosettes, as well as retaining their Michelin star...
