Square Meal review of The Black Swan:
The Banks family has been farming hereabouts for hundreds of years, & their latest venture is this handsome, 16th-century pub out in the sticks. It’s a delightfully secluded spot: take a pint of Copper Dragon into the garden & soak up the views over the rolling Yorkshire Wolds. Inside, it’s cosily rustic, with open fires, beams, flickering candles & some seriously tempting chalked-up specials. Meat comes from nearby farms, while bread & ice-creams are made in-house. For lunch try creamy eggs Benedict with local ham, or wild rocket & potato soup with cracked pepper chantilly. Alternatively, book a table in the upstairs dining room & tuck into braised shin of beef & Black Sheep Ale pie with pickled red cabbage or Whitby haddock & chips. The pub provides local maps & walking routes, so indulge in dark chocolate, bourbon & vanilla mousse – you can yomp across the fields later!
