The lovely arts & crafts-style garden, designed by Rosemary Verey, attracts horticulturists from all over the world, but the 17th-century house is a popular destination, too. Verey's former home is now an acclaimed hotel, with a modern spa & the Potager restaurant, where menu changes depend on what's available in the kitchen garden, at the local butcher & what's on the daily fish delivery. A typical meal might kick off with Dorset crab, celery & apple salad, before progressing to vincisgrassi – 18th-century baked pasta with porcini, ham & truffles – or perhaps Cotswold lamb with cassoulet, tomato & sweetbreads. To finish there's Venetian rice pudding with roasted figs. The hotel also owns the adjacent Village Pub, which serves fabulous gastropub-style food & offers accommodation in simple but comfortable bedrooms.
