Square Meal review of Barnsley House:
The lovely arts and crafts-style garden, designed by Rosemary Verey, attracts horticulturists from all over the world, but the 17th-century house is a popular destination, too. Verey’s former home is now an acclaimed 18-bedroom hotel, with a modern spa and an Italian restaurant, where the menu changes daily depending on what’s available in the kitchen garden, at the local butcher and what’s on the daily fish delivery from Cornwall. A typical meal might kick off with bresaola with goats' cheese, walnuts and black pepper, before progressing to vincisgrassi maceratsese – 18th-century baked pasta with porcini, ham and truffles – or perhaps tournedos Rossini. To finish there are cheeses with fig salami or semifreddo of white chocolate and almonds. The hotel also owns the adjacent Village Pub, which serves fabulous gastropub-style food & offers accommodation in seven simple but comfortable bedrooms.
