Square Meal Review of Wickham Wine Bar & Restaurant ?

Chef-proprietor Clive Clare-Barker’s glorious 15th-century building, complete with medieval wall paintings, a dining balcony & original oak beams, creates an atmospheric setting for a meal: even the menu exudes character. It passionately trawls all points of the culinary globe, so expect tortillas with chorizo, smoked salmon terrine & roasted red onion tartlet with blue cheese, alongside Thai red fish curry, slow-roasted pork belly or local venison. A fine wine list & relaxed, amiable service are further plus points.

Wickham Wine Bar is set on the edge of Wickham Square the building has fantastic old beams and is set on two levels with an outside area and wine garden at the back. I would say they have a modern British spin, the pork dishes have been good and the fish very fresh.

We first went with my parents in law in 2008, the food was good, well presented and the service was good. I remember the pork belly being very

Our second visit was in Summer 08 for my partners birthday, everything was positive about this visit and we recommended it to friends.

We took my parents in Jan09 and we were particularly disappointed – the list of things is rather long which is a shame having previously had very good meals there.

The G&T was flat, service was very slow, the starter of onion and goats cheese tart was very heavy, my partner had pigeon to start with an indescript sauce and corn type cake! I had lamb that was very tasty but in places far to pink. You had to hunt for the dauphinois potatoes that were dry and not creamy at all, the bottom was burnt, the accompanying veg was overcooked and burnt, the mint pesto sauce was a couple of drips with no flavour. My father had trout and though the fish was very good the piece was tiny and swamped in heavy mash. My partner had the belly pork and instead of lovely spiced crackling we had previously there was half an inch of sloppy fat. We had to wait a good 15 minutes before being offered the dessert menu, mum and dad had cheese and I have never seen such an appalling cheese board. Per person about 8 biscuits and 6 tiny chunks of cheese with a huge bowl of chutney, no butter, celery, apple the usual things you would expect on a £7.95 cheese selection!! We had sticky toffee pudding which was ok but no icecream. The table next to us sent 3 plates back.

Very disappointed and we won't be going back any time soon. Overall the meal lacked colour, the flavours were dull, the accompanying sauces and veg etc were particularly bad and the service was slow and empty glasses left on the table all evening.

The bill was over £155 and we walked away really wishing we had gone to Greens across the road!
