Square Meal Review of Mackintosh’s Canteen ?

Local restaurateur Henry Watt has created two different eating experiences at Mackintosh’s Canteen. Downstairs in the Canteen proper, the vibe is informal & lively, with communal supper menus, takeaway coffee bar & simple, hearty food. Upstairs, the long, bright brasserie, with its art-gallery feel & big panoramic windows overlooking the Chapelfields mall, is more of a foodie affair – though still unpretentious & cosmopolitan in feel. The array of comfort food includes a proper Aberdeen Angus burger or oriental chicken satay, with more interesting specials, such as scallops & samphire or sea bass with minted peas, capers, crayfish & beurre noisette, showing culinary ambition.

This restaurant is centrally situated, good people-watching windows, friendly staff and good food. Everything is nicely done without being pretentious and the atmosphere is just right for a lunchtime treat. Never been in the evening. Although everything is mostly beyond criticism I do miss a little bit of dark chocolate with my coffee at the end of the meal – they just don't do it! Funny that, it's just the kind of place you might expect it.
