Located just off Norwich’s inner ring road, this suburban gastropub has an appealing, laid-back vibe. There are excellent cask ales & a gutsy bar menu downstairs (smoked haddock gratin, lamb’s liver & bacon), but the full-on, serious eating takes place in the 1up restaurant upstairs, where high ceilings & sash windows meet leaf-patterned wallpaper, velvet curtains, & monochrome portraits of screen idols. Here the kitchen pushes the boat out with the likes of Lowestoft herring three ways (sweet-pickled, seared & cured) with beetroot & parsley salad, ahead of Gressingham duck breast & confit leg served with sardalaise potatoes, spinach, baby golden beets & blood orange. Desserts are just as tempting, perhaps textures of rhubarb & ginger or dark chocolate moelleux with blood orange sorbet, pistachio & minted orange salad.
