Located off Norwich’s inner ring road, this suburban gastropub has a nice laidback vibe, with the excellent cask ales & gutsy bar menu downstairs making a neat foil for full-on serious cooking in the 1up restaurant upstairs, where high ceilings & sash windows meet leaf-patterned wallpaper, velvet curtains, & black & white portraits of screen idols. Chef Eden Derrick’s elaborate menu pushes the boat out with luxury ingredients & detailed descriptions. Try charred smoked salmon, fine green beans, candied hazelnuts & vanilla infusion, or Gressingham duck breast with thyme fondant potato, sticky fig tartlet, apple relish, roasted celeriac & cinnamon-infused jus. Desserts are just as tempting, featuring free-standing cinnamon creme brulee, poached pear, cardamom ice-cream & black pepper biscuit.
