Square Meal review of The Walnut Tree:
For some 35 years, The Walnut Tree was one of the most famous restaurants in the UK. Franco & Ann Taruschio sold up in 2000 and this beacon of provincial dining closed in February 2007. Happily its demise was short lived, thanks to gastro-hero Shaun Hill. There’s nothing particularly fancy about the new incarnation (undressed tables, unobtrusive art, lemon trees) and service is the friendly local sort. A few fancy ingredients gild the menu – morels partnering English asparagus, halibut with mussels, clams & saffron – but the emphasis is on artful simplicity: sweet flakes of white crab meat with gentle basil mayonnaise might be followed by plump slices of roast pigeon breast, with the richly flavoured legs shredded & presented in a paper-thin pastry pastilla – a piece of true culinary accomplishment. For around £20 you can also enjoy a terrific three-course set lunch, culminating in a Bakewell tart of unimpeachable almondy moistness.
