Restaurants in Winchester

The ancient capital of England boasts some 15 centuries of history, much of it bound up in Winchester’s massive cathedral, one of the largest in Europe. The city is also home to the University of Winchester and the famous public school, Winchester College, and makes a vibrant heritage destination just an hour south-west of London. Since 1974, the city has hosted the annual Hat Fair, a celebration of street theatre that includes performances, workshops, and gatherings at several venues, and the UK’s largest and most successful farmers’ markets is held every second and last Sunday of the month. Restaurants in Winchester offer plenty of choice, from the original Hotel du Vin, the prototype for today’s well-known boutique hotel chain, and Chesil Rectory with its well-executed brasserie-style dishes, to The Black Boy, a pub with a rustic theme offering simple cooking, while a Michelin star gives the seal of approval to the food at The Black Rat.
