Situated on an estuary in the English Channel with an unusual double high tide, Southampton became an important port in medieval times. It was from here that the Titanic pulled away on her maiden voyage on 10 April 1912 – a third of those who lost their lives were from Southampton – and the city’s Titanic Trail is a popular tourist attraction. Now considered the cruise capital of northern Europe, playing host to more than four million visitors a year, the city boasts a range of museums, art galleries, music venues and some fantastic shopping – this is one of the best retail destinations in the UK. Big-name chains predominate when it comes to restaurants in Southampton, but The White Star Tavern, formerly a hotel for ocean-going passengers, has now been reincarnated as a modern-day urban inn. There’s also the popular brasserie-style Simons at Oxfords, and Cantina is the city’s original Mexican restaurant.
