During the 19th century, Sheffield was one of the world’s most foremost steel manufacturers. Known as Steel City, it enjoyed international recognition for the production of cutlery, even mass-producing items such as the Bowie knife and shipping them to the USA. Although no longer an industrial base, the fourth-largest city in England makes the most of its good transport links – next to the M1 and M18 with easy access north, south and east – and boasts both Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield, an energetic central business district and the glorious Derbyshire Peak District on its doorstep. There’s an energetic and vibrant food scene, too, with restaurants in Sheffield offering a range of choices from the pubby virtues and real ales of Milestone (and its sibling Wig & Pen by the Milestone), via gutsy, wholesome plates of food in Kitchen, to the modern European outlook of Silversmith’s, located in one of the town’s historic cutlery works.
