The county town of Berkshire is one of Britain’s leading high-tech hubs thanks to its location – close to the M4 within easy reach of Heathrow – and it’s a real commuter hotspot, with so many big name firms (Microsoft, Verizon, Ericsson) based in and around the town. Add to this the University of Reading with its great credentials and high entry requirements, the Reading Festival, held every August bank-holiday weekend, and a train service to London that takes just 30 minutes, and you have everything you want right on your doorstep. However, the first-time visitor, exploring the stylish Oracle shopping centre, might be forgiven for thinking the town has little more to offer than big-name chain restaurants – the best restaurants in Reading require some seeking out. These include Cerise, located in boutique hotel The Forbury, London Street Brasserie overlooking the River Kennet, and the Michelin-starred L’Ortolan, a few miles away in Shinfield.
