Restaurants in Oxford

The oldest university town in the UK, Oxford is known as the city of the ‘dreaming spires’, famous for its beautiful medieval churches, colleges and associated buildings such as the world-famous Bodleian Library (one of the oldest in Europe) and Radcliffe Camera (Britain’s first circular library). With founding dates in the 13th century, Balliol, University, and Merton all claim oldest-college status, while Magdalen (pronounced ‘maudlin’), and Christ Church (of Brideshead Revisited fame) are established tourist destinations. As for where to eat, the general trend for restaurants in Oxford is informal, best seen in places such as Sojo (Chinese) or Edamame (Japanese home cooking). Elsewhere, there’s the smart, convivial Ashmolean Dining Room on the rooftop of The Ashmolean Museum, The Magdalen Arms, the kind of gastropub you’re glad to stumble on, and that Oxford institution, The Cherwell Boathouse, a punt station and restaurant on the banks of the River Cherwell.
