Home to Corrie, City and United, the third-largest Chinatown in Europe, and a neon-lit ‘curry mile’ with the largest concentration of (mainly) Pakistani and Bangladeshi restaurants in the country, Manchester punches well above its weight in terms of its culinary offering. The rainy city also likes nothing better than to party, counting some 500 licensed premises in the city centre alone. These range from salt-of-the-earth boozers to gastropubs like Mark Addy, and from chilled-out café bars to the many famous gay bars in the Canal Street area; the city’s club scene is also legendary. The Printworks and The Triangle are popular shopping and entertainment destinations, Red Chilli is the top shout for Chinese, and Shere Khan is a Curry Mile favourite. Although the city’s slavish devotion to glamour, style and new trends means Michelin stars have eluded it, Michael Caines at ABode and Harvey Nichols Second Floor Restaurant, Brasserie and Bar are top-notch restaurants in Manchester.
