One of the oldest cities in England, Leicester still bears ancient Roman pavements and baths from its early settlement as Ratae Corieltauvorum, a Roman military outpost – the baths now form part of the Jewry Wall Museum next to the 1,200-year-old Church of St Nicholas. Now the 10th-largest city in the UK, Leicester is home to the National Space Centre as well as a sizeable student population (courtesy of De Montfort University and University of Leicester) and a large South Asian community. It is this diverse population that has influenced the wide range of restaurants in Leicester – with the Golden Mile, a stretch of the Belgrave Road, famous for its Indian restaurants, sari shops, and jewellers. Here, family-run Bobby’s was the first Indian vegetarian to open in the city. In other areas, Entropy is a laid-back modern British restaurant offering simple food and easy-drinking wines, while Maiyango is a city-slick modern European restaurant and cocktail bar.
