Restaurants in Islington and Barnsbury

Don’t get stuck in Starbucks or a bland big-name chain – cafés and restaurants in Islington and Barnsbury have more than their fair share of zest, charm and charisma. The area may be home to Georgian town houses, Sadler’s Wells and Camden Passage antiques, but there’s also Yotam Ottolenghi’s flagship restaurant, as well as some great gastropubs. A regenerated King’s Cross is fast becoming a destination in its own right, with the likes of Caravan opening next to Central St Martins in Granary Square. Elsewhere, Hackney boasts Broadway Market and the famed Little Vietnam (try Viet Grill on Kingsland Road), Dalston draws visitors to the multi-cultural Ridley Road market as well as its hipster bars and nightclubs, while Stoke Newington Church Street offers an array of cafés, shops and ethnic restaurants like Turkish eatery Homa. And it’s fitting that Soho hotspot Polpo has extended its tentacles to cool Smithfield, while Clerkenwell boasts the Michelin-starred St John’s and Comptoir Gasçon.
