With its fishing industry in decline and home to one of the biggest council estates in Europe, Hull tends to get a bad press. It’s near the East Coast and off the beaten track, so the few tourists who pass through are usually on their way to catch the ferry to Rotterdam. But it is one of the least expensive places to live in England, and as the 10th largest city in the country, supports a couple of renowned Rugby League teams, Hull Kingston Rovers and Hull FC, and the University of Hull. In fact, it has a thriving student community and good nightlife, but good restaurants in Hull are in short supply. The city is famed for its fish and chips, however, among the best are the three Kingfisher chippies in Springbank, Gypsyville and Endike Lane. For creative fine dining, head for Winteringham Fields on the south side of the Humber.
