The M1 passes about 10 miles to the east, making Derby the perfect gateway to the Peak District. It does tend to be overshadowed by the attractions of Nottingham half-an-hour’s drive to the east, but this large regional city, which made its name as the pioneer of silk, bone china and Rolls-Royce engines, has plenty of charms. There’s the pretty Cathedral Quarter – with its smaller independent shops, boutiques and home to Derby's café culture – plus the usual array of high-street chain stores in the city centre and at the large Westfield shopping centre on the outskirts. It’s also a passionate sporting city – home to Derby County FC and close to the Donington Grand Prix racing circuit. Nottingham offers all the big meal tickets as restaurants in Derby tend to be mid-range national chains. However, exceptions include Anoki for good Indian food, and Darleys for lively modern British cooking.
