Once voted the eighth best place to live by Channel 4 property programme Location, Location, Location, Chelmsford is just 30 miles east of London – a quick half-hour commute to the City. Boasting good schools, a university, pretty surrounding countryside and stunning villages, the city is also the birthplace of radio (the first official radio broadcast was made in 1920 from the Marconi Factory in New Street) and the home of the annual V Festival (at Hylands Park on the penultimate weekend in August). A farmers market is held on the first Sunday morning of each month, a gourmet food fair every Friday, and the indoor market has a mix of shops and stalls including a butcher, vegetables stalls and a cheese shop. As restaurants in Chelmsford tend to be mid-range chain eateries, locals head out to outlying villages for popular pubs like The Square and Compasses in Fairstead or The Bull at Great Totham.
