p>The pretty Berkshire town tends to be dominated by its spectacular racecourse –one of the world's finest and most famous, attracting more than half-a-million visitors each year. Ascot racecourse dates to 1711 (when it was founded by Queen Anne) and while there are meets throughout the year, it is best known for Royal Ascot. Held annually in mid-June, this is one of Europe’s best-known race meetings and a major event in the UK’s social calendar. The Royal Family arrive each day in horse-drawn carriages, and press coverage of the posh frocks and statement hats often exceed reports of the day’s racing. Away from the racecourse, you’ll find a pleasant High Street but mostly chain restaurants. Finding good restaurants in Ascot means heading to Sunningdale for upscale modern European cooking at Bluebells, Chobham for Stovell’s creative fine dining, or Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot for Michael Wignall at the Latymer’s two-Michelin-starred extravaganza.
