SquareMeal Review of The Ivy in the Park

Bronze Award

Business folk rejoice: Canary Wharf’s reputation as an eating-out desert has been partially improved by the sprouting of a new Ivy. It’s no surprise, then, that the place was packed to the rafters when we dropped by early on a Tuesday evening. But despite the full house, the famed Ivy efficiency was working at full speed among the army of waiting staff weaving their way around the hubbub.

As at other outposts of the fast-expanding chain, the interior still maintains the exclusive feel of the Covent Garden original, making any visit feel like a special occasion. The twist at this Ivy is the lush greenery placed around the inside, which makes up for the lacklustre park outside – though a retractable roof and terrace will add heaps of alfresco appeal when summer rolls around.

But while the ambience and surroundings have transplanted the Ivy magic intact to E14, the cooking has rather less sparkle. The white onion soup with a creamy truffle mascarpone was perfectly serviceable and the crispy courgette fries with a smooth chilli, lemon and mint yoghurt went down well. A tender lamb shoulder was enjoyable enough, but a side order of green beans was far too salty. The chicken Milanese with a truffle cream sauce was decent, but nothing special and the recommended truffle and parmesan chips left us wondering whether everything really needed to have truffle on it. Puddings were better: a tart passion fruit baked Alaska and Instagram-worthy chocolate bombe.

And while the offering couldn’t be accused of being short on choice – there are breakfast, weekend brunch and vegetarian and vegan menus – the regulars that this place is so clearly aimed at may wish that the familiar line-up of tempura prawns, crispy duck salad, chicken Milanese and shepherd’s pie was refreshed more often.

That said, competitive pricing extends to cocktails and the Euro-focused wine list, and with glamour and fun in short supply in Docklands, The Ivy in the Park should put down deep roots in Canary Wharf.

About

The Ivy in the Park is wonderfully located for Canary Wharf-based punters and visitors, set within Canada Square. The sleek financial hub of London makes a complementary backdrop to the lush greenery that borders the rooftop terrace and exterior of the restaurant.

The charming eatery is surrounded by shops and as it is located within the park, it offers lovely views, especially from the rooftop terrace. The interiors are elegant and sophisticated with tasteful bursts of colours and plush furnishings. The bar is sleek and stunning, and the brasserie offers a wonderful menu of cocktails and other boozes.

The all-day menu, which runs from breakfast to dinner, features all of the Ivy brasserie classics such as duck liver parfait, truffle arancini, and Iberico pork. The miso black cod fillet is a highlight of the menu, served with picked fennel. For more casual dining affairs, punters can stop by for a quick bite with the Ivy’s delectable offering of sandwiches. The roast beef sandwich is a hearty choice stuffed with warm sirloin, caramelised onions, chestnut mushrooms, drizzled with decadent truffle sauce, and served with thick cut chips. For afternoon tea enthusiasts, there is a lovely selection of cream tea and savouries available from 3pm – 5pm – there’s a classic version and a more boozy champagne afternoon tea.

The Ivy in the Park also hosts boozy brunches on the weekends replete with stunning breakfast dishes such buttermilk pancakes laden with fresh berries and an indulgent lobster eggs benedict. Plus on Fridays, the resident DJ kicks off the weekend with live sets and keeps on going from Saturday afternoon. There are loads of dining occasions to be had at the Ivy brasserie, each one as impressive as the next, with stunning dishes and great service – you’ll want to keep coming back here for more.

An excellent place for lunch for social or business meets, food and drink faultless and attentive staff give great service. Venue is slightly noisy (but its very popular), tables are well spaced out, providing privacy.

Slow service

Service very slow. Restaurant was not busy. Lots of staff and managers walking around yet we and other customers had to chase staff to order. No one seemed in control or checking to ensure customers were attended to.

Our americano coffees came 30 seconds before our breakfast. Coffee was luke warm. One breafast was with well done scrambled egg. Waiter was not aware which was which. Repsonse was she did not take the order so she did know. The toast came 10 mins afer the breakfast.

All in all disappointing from such a high end establshment.

Really nice place to meet friends and enjoy a nice meal in a special environment.

We were a group of 4 who dined Saturday afternoon. we did wait a while (about 30 mins ) to get our drinks order, the staff were very busy but always smiling and pleasant so a credit to the resturant.

Food was lovely we be returning.
