SquareMeal Review of The Clock House Peckham Rye

Recently refurbished in the quirky country-kitchen style typical of Young’s boozers, this gastropub on Peckham Rye Common now boasts a sprawling dining area with clusters of ornamental plates, old-fashioned lampshades and brightly cushioned booths against a tasteful, neutral background. The result is a welcoming space with a pretty flowered terrace perfect for summer. To start, choose from globe-trotting small plates – perhaps crisply coated, shredded pig’s cheeks, bouncy Asian-style squid rings or heady truffled celeriac fries. Mains channel gastropub favourites: the house burger with bloody Mary relish is a cheese-dribbled masterpiece, while cottage pie pushes the envelope with the addition of bone marrow. After that, try a moist chocolate brownie or the sweet-savoury delights of salted caramel ice cream. Swift, smiley service and an approachable wine list entice locals of all ages to gather for languorous Cheers-style evenings.

The worst pub experience I have ever had!

I booked an outdoor table to have dinner with some friends before we went into tier 3. This is my 3rd trip to the Clock House in the last couple of months and the 3rd time they told me they had run out of gas for their heaters when I asked to turn one on.  They allocated me a table which would have required everyone to get up to let one person out, and made a fuss when I asked about another table for 6 which was free... they never came back so we just sat there. The other table for 6 remained empty all evening.  Miraculously they were then able to turn a heater on for a table of 2 who clearly knew their waiter. We ordered mulled wine.. it was clearly just microwaved red wine with an orange slice thrown in. When we later ordered several glasses of wine they dumped them on the table and couldn’t tell us which was which (3 different reds had been ordered). We then waited over an hour for our food despite asking a couple of times and it only came when we asked them to forget about it and just bring the drinks bill. We had sat down at 7.30, the food arrived at 9pm.  2 of the dishes didn’t arrive and we chased these and they were brought a little later. We asked for the bill straight away as one friend had to get home to her baby, and we paid immediately. As we were getting ready to leave, they then came over with another bill and told us there were differences between the bill they had given us and this one (like we had something to do with it). She then told us it must have been things we ordered later than the rest, but we had ordered everything at one time, it was clearly the orders they had forgotten the first time! We paid for these extra items and left, to dirty looks from the useless staff. This is hands down the worst service I have ever experienced and the food was pretty bad too.  I was trying to support a local pub and thought they might appreciate all the business they could get before we went into tier 3, clearly not. I won’t be going back, ever!

Christmas

We pop in with my hubby and 3years old daughter on 25/12/19. Would like to have just something small for my girl and drinks, unfortunately they refuse to serve us as they said kitchen is closed already and bar will close soon. When we came, was 4:50pm, restsurant supposed to close at 5pm and whole place at 5:30pm. I asked one more time kindly if we couldn't have just soup for our daughter ... same answer. We get really disappointed. Was Christmas! Bad impression and shame.
We loved this place before and get used to come here during a summer.

Wish you just happy customers.

Bad food, bad service - one to avoid
The decor looks pretty in a fake-hipster sort of way, but as an actual restaurant, this is a waste of money. The food's been going downhill for a while now; what finally clinched it for us was when we went there on a Saturday night, to find that: - They'd run out of one of the only two vegetarian options; when I said I'd tried the other and didn't like it, the waitress actually agreed that it was pretty disgusting, and when I asked if the kitchen could just do me a fried egg (which was part of one of their other dishes) she said no - The drinks were ridiculously expensive - The waitress was snitty and rude High prices, bad restaurant. Not worth it.
