With its divided dining areas, comfortable bar chairs & outside seating, newspaper-themed Gazette has done its best to make the chic new residential developments alongside the Thames seem atmospheric. All-day menus reflect a distinctly French approach: charcuterie, foie gras terrine & French-style roast chicken all feature. The cooking isn’t brilliant, but disappointments are few. Bavette a l’echalotte had just the right balance of rich, sweet & savoury notes, but its accompanying chips were crisp to the point of charred. The European wine list has plenty to offer all pockets. Wise diners should steer clear of the lethal homemade digestifs, heading instead for glass tankards of fresh herb infusions; rose petal & marjoram were both great.
