Square Meal Review of De Hems Dutch Bar ?

When Dutch supporters convene here to cheer on the boys in orange, De Hems feels a bit like Den Haag. Its name commemorates the original owner – a sea dog who leased the current building in 1890 – & the Dutch Resistance holed up here during WWII. These days, the bar is reputed to get through more draught Oranjeboom than any pub outside of Holland – a staggering 300,000 pints per year. In terms of beery clout, however, the Dutch are outplayed by top Belgian strikers such as Bellevue Kriek, Maredsous & Rochefort (at 11.3% abv, tomorrow’s headache waiting to happen). On the food front, frikandellen speciaal (hot dog, red onion, chips, curry ketchup & mayonnaise), bitterballen (deep-fried meatballs in a ragoût sauce) & waffles are not for faint hearts.
