Square Meal Review of Cellar Door ?

Loitering in a public convenience could land a chap in hot water, but louche behaviour is almost expected at these risqué converted loos just off Aldwych. Part 1930s’ Berlin burlesque joint, part Pal Joey cabaret lounge, this diminutive subterranean hangout is the place to come for Dita Von Teese-style teases, musical swingers, rat-pack crooners & drag divas. Enjoy nibbles, quaff Peruvian beer or sip Perrier-Jouët (£49) from a satin slipper if you will; otherwise it’s all about (cool as a) cucumber martinis, honey (I drank the) daiquiri & Starbucks must die (Cognac, vanilla vodka, Kahlúa & espresso). Other similarly luvvie mixes reference celebs such as Catherine Deneuve, Simone de Beauvoir, Edith Piaf & the daddy of porn Ron Jeremy.

This place is great when you want a few cocktails between 5-8pm (happy hour) on a weekday – the drinks are brilliant (though hugely bulked up with crushed ice) if a little on the expensive side, and it's too easy to run up a huge bar tab after spending a few hours in here with a few friends. The place gets completely packed out about 7pm onwards, made difficult by the fact that this place is tiny! (Don't be fooled by the wall mirrors when you first walk in) and a select few people are clever enough, or quick enough, to book one of six tables (or five when the acts are on). Having said this, if you're not claustrophobic or short of cash, this is a lively, fun little bar to go to and the burlesque/jazz acts are very entertaining!
