Allcomers are welcome at this cool canteen attached to the A Foundation studio complex on Arnold Circus, even though it’s only open for weekday breakfast & lunch. Caterers Arnold & Henderson, of St John renown (see review), are behind the venture & there are shades of the old stager in its short, daily menu – although Rochelle adds some Eurocentric variations to the Saint’s nose-to-tail brutalism. Here you will find starters such as pork rillette or deep-fried squid with aïoli, & mains of chicken leg with pearl barley salad or chorizo with chickpeas & fried egg. Breakfast offers nothing more than granola, eggs on toast or smoked salmon, & there’s an appealingly homespun vibe to the whole operation: Ercol chairs & Artek tables look out onto a nice quiet patch of East End. There’s no licence, so BYO or quench your thirst with Fentimans pop or Chegworth Valley juices.
