Square Meal Review of The Guildford Arms ?

Since taking over a year or so back, Guy Awford, chef-proprietor of Greenwich’s popular Inside bistro, has smartened up this likeable pub. The Guildford Arms, situated on a select residential street away from the tourist crowds, comprises a large garden, wedge-shaped bar & dapper upstairs dining room. Regulars populate the bar, ordering real ale & above-average pub grub (steak & chips, sausage & mash, Sunday roasts). On the newly refurbished first floor, Awford has devised a fixed-price menu of more creative dishes (served Tuesday to Saturday evenings). Smoked ham hock, soft-boiled duck egg, & chive flowers give a cheffy twist to a salad of new potatoes & French beans, while roast salmon comes with herb gnocchi in a tomato & mascarpone sauce. Friendly, knowledgeable staff keep things ticking along nicely.

The Hedonist :: The Guildford Arms – Review

I hadn’t been to Greenwich for several years so it felt slightly bizarre to be visiting London’s most genteel south-eastern village two nights in a row. My first revisiting was to Trinity College of Music, situated in the glorious surroundings of the Royal Naval College, to accompany my mum to an alumni event. The second stage of my epic was to visit Georgian gastropub The Guildford Arms, just a short walk from Greenwich DLR and the mainline rail station, which I had been invited to review. The restaurant has two dining rooms, a private room and a sunken garden where we were planning to eat. Chef patron Guy Awford’s has considerable local form and so I had invited along my friend Catherine who lives around the corner from the pub for an insider’s view...

  2. I can’t really bring myself to enjoy gastropub food. For the most part it’s below average and despite the proliferation of gastronomically focused pubs, the food is pretty pitiful compared to the offerings in Michelin restaurants, who very often charge similar prices. That said, The Guildford Arms, a relative newcomer to the Greenwich area having graced the neighbourhood for four months is worth a mention. With an elegant first floor restaurant and contemporary, chic, clean decor in the pub downstairs it’s an oasis from the city and actually serves some fairly good British food. Indeed I am as impressed by one of their starters as I have been in fine dining establishments...
