Since taking over a year or so back, Guy Awford, chef-proprietor of Greenwich’s popular Inside bistro, has smartened up this likeable pub. The Guildford Arms, situated on a select residential street away from the tourist crowds, comprises a large garden, wedge-shaped bar & dapper upstairs dining room. Regulars populate the bar, ordering real ale & above-average pub grub (steak & chips, sausage & mash, Sunday roasts). On the newly refurbished first floor, Awford has devised a fixed-price menu of more creative dishes (served Tuesday to Saturday evenings). Smoked ham hock, soft-boiled duck egg, & chive flowers give a cheffy twist to a salad of new potatoes & French beans, while roast salmon comes with herb gnocchi in a tomato & mascarpone sauce. Friendly, knowledgeable staff keep things ticking along nicely.
