Square Meal review of Faulkner’s:
Entering this fish restaurant, hidden behind net curtains on a rackety Dalston strip, is like stepping back three or four decades in time. Faulkner’s is an east London institution still patronised by the old guard of cab drivers & pensioners, plus anyone else who appreciates beautifully cooked fresh fish. Huge cod & haddock fillets are cooked in the crispest of batter to keep them juicy & fork-tender, or can be fried in matzo meal, poached or grilled. There’s also calamari, mussels & the retro likes of whitebait, prawn cocktail & jellied eels. Puddings of cherry tart, spotted dick & jam roly-poly with custard are also resolutely trad. Staff with uncanny memories for even occasional customers add to the old-world charm.
