Square Meal review of Mantra:
This new modern Indian is a ray of light amid a row of high street shops that have seen better days. An all-glass frontage is matched by an all-glass, light-changing floor, glass tables, striking red seating & imposing chandeliers. It’s more Soho than west London suburbia, & the Punjabi-style cooking, with its mix of contemporary presentation & traditional, robust flavours, is as attractive as the decor. Kick off with excellent spring chicken coated in yoghurt & tantalizing spices. The tandoori-glazed quails marinated in green herbs & lime juice are equally captivating, while the grilled broccoli, flavoured with zesty ginger & cardamom, packs a real punch. Mains are more limited, but the lamb biryani is outstanding, as is the murgh makhani in a silky sauce of cream, tomato & fenugreek. Likeable service & surprisingly well-made cocktails add to a pleasurable evening. A raised deck garden at the back is perfect for summer alfresco dining.
