The £20 million refit of the baronial Hotel Russell on touristy Russell Square has turned its bar into a destination for local office workers, as well as residents. They get a piped muzak-free zone with their Chablis or Penfold’s Cabernet Sauvignon, while the 40-strong list also runs to Champagne Mercier Rose & Dom Pérignon, if you have something to celebrate. The vibe is a little sedate but classic cocktails are made with confidence & there’s the usual roll-call of premium-brand spirits, soft drinks & lagers. Prices are average for a London hotel bar, which is to say a Manhattan will part you from the best part of a tenner.
