Square Meal review of The Champion:
The champions in question here are the likes of four-time Scottish Open golf victor Young Tom Morris (who died aged 24 in 1875) & legendary cricketer WG Grace, who is commemorated in a series of elaborate stained-glass windows that keep the light out & shield wicked imbibers from passing view, as was the norm in Victorian times. This Samuel Smith lovely offers the usual brewed-in-Tadcaster suspects such as Wheat Beer, as well as imported continental lagers & a smattering of wines. The interior may be gothic, but the pub has across-the-board appeal – expect everyone from old biddies to young trendies & tourists, filling up on sarnies, jacket spuds, sausages & mash, & fish & chips.
