Some claim Dukes serves the world’s best martini. Mixed by manager Alessandro Palazzi, they are incontrovertibly among the planet’s most potent – just try a brace of Vespers at the bar that inspired hotel regular Ian Fleming to make the lethal vodka and gin martini 007’s default call. The smart, if somewhat ‘mumsy’ surroundings are more Judi Dench with her sling-backs kicked off than Daniel Craig in a razor-sharp Tom Ford tuxedo, but they’re fine as a backdrop for classic and contemporary cocktails (at sobering St James’s prices) alongside a selection of posh nosh. Otherwise, hit the gazebo-style courtyard ‘garden’ for fine Cuban cigars from the humidor and some of the best brandies money can buy. Pretty in peony, pink and pistachio, the plush PJ lounge (as in Perrier-Jouët) is where dressy dames convene for Champagne and canapés.
