Square Meal Review of Feng Shang Princess ?

There’s something rather romantic about this Chinese restaurant aboard a pagoda-style boat floating on Regent’s Canal. It looks best at night when its twinkling lights reflect on the water. Once on board, keep your eyes on the pretty views through the wraparound windows, as the smart interiors look a little worn. The menu isn’t exactly cutting edge, swerving from Cantonese to Szechuan & Beijing cuisines, delivering a familiar roll-call of dishes. Seafood lettuce wraps, prawn toast & crispy aromatic duck with pancakes are typical starters, with noodles & rice to follow, plus beef with black bean sauce, crispy chicken with mango & chilli paste, or sweet & sour prawns. It’s all perfectly good, though the Titanic prices aren’t necessarily warranted. Perhaps that’s why Feng Shang is often short of passengers.

Its a bit strange this place, especially on a wet March evening when there are only 8 other diners. The food is a bit mixed up as its Chinese yet tries to include Japanese in the style of Nobu, which I must say it does rather well until you remember you are not in Park Lane or Mayfair but on a boat on a cold wet night in an almost empty floating dining room near Chalk Farm.
The website promises that the proprietor creates a special ambience for her customers and is always on hand which was not true of my table but was of the table next to ours where two very large middle aged Eastern European prostitues sat with one rather skinny English IT programmer.
I wouldn't go back but we had a great time mostly due to the table we were listening in on. When we overheard “you had better eat up…you'll need all your strength later” we couldn't hold our laughter in and left feeling much better than before we went in.
The food is good, its a bit overpriced and if you want black cod you are better off elsewhere but still for a one off its worth a visit (for people watching mainly).

Terrific restaurant. Terrific food. just love this place Great location and atmosphere. Upmarket Chinese and therefore a bit more expensive than normal Chinese but well worth paying a little more. Great place for a special night out but we have used it as a “local” for many years and have never been disappointed. It is not surprising to see off-duty celebs here. Cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Just fantastic, I went with my husband and it's now my new favourite restaurant.

The atmosphere is very relaxing and very romantic, the food is affordable, not the cheapest but you wouldn't expect that for the quality of food you're getting, the menu offers a range of different foods, it's not a lot but again, you wouldn't expect a take-away style menu for a high class restaurant and they have quite a nice selection for vegetarians. They have just refurbished the downstairs and I must say it looks very nice and modern, the two floors are now very different but I think the lower part is used more for functions and events. I must recommend having the Black Cod and the Beef with the red wine sauce, according to my husband it is to die for and the mock chicken is superb for all you vegetarians out there.

    A big two thumbs up.
