‘A great place to grab a bite’, this little taste of the Middle East combines airy decor & communal dining with an affordable price tag. Factor in decent – if not outstanding – cooking, & you’ll understand why it’s often ‘heaving’. To start, choose from a vast array of traditional mezze, ranging from cold imam bayildi (a herb-infused dish of roast tomatoes & aubergines) or bakla (broad beans with coriander, yoghurt & dill) to warm spicy sausages or a wholesome red lentil soup. Next up, there are interesting mains (okra or octopus, say), although simple things on skewers are equally worth seeking out, with meats such as shish kofte ‘grilled to perfection’. Inconsistent service & high decibels can make it a ‘no-no for a business lunch’, but when it comes to casual dining, Haz hits the spot.
