On every high street & in every supermarket, it’s hard to imagine life without Pizza Express. Everyone has their favourite topping, with most diners absurdly loyal to their ‘usual’ – be it the spicy pepperoni on the American, or the colourful fiorentina, balancing spinach, egg & black olive. That said, two relatively recent innovations, an ultra-thin ‘roma’ crust (allowing you even more of that favourite topping) & the calorie-savvy ‘leggere’ (with a missing centre, replaced by salad) have been runaway hits. There are also regular creations from guest chef Francesco Mazzei (he of fine-dining restaurant L’Anima), for anyone looking to branch out. Simple pastas (lasagne, cannelloni) have their fans, as do the large salads, now thoughtfully served with dressing on the side. Fans quip that Pizza Express ‘serves pizza expressly’ & simply does ‘what it says on the box’.
