Square Meal Review of The Real Greek Spitalfields ?

Most Brits’ knowledge of Greek food is limited to their holiday gyros & moussaka, washed down with copious quantities of Mythos beer. The Real Greek chain has its work cut out convincing the populace there’s more to it, but its lively contemporary eateries do a game job with an enticing menu that champions the region’s wonderful ingredients – octopus, herbs, honey, olives, pulses & suchlike. ‘Nibbles & mezze’ cover a lot of ground from dolmades & grilled haloumi to smoked aubergine salad or garlic & chilli tiger prawns, though mains are pretty much limited to souvlaki with flatbread. Meagre portion sizes are a serious grumble, so you’ll probably have ample space for pudding. Think carefully before ordering the ‘Greek sundae’, however; there are calorie counts with every dish, & that bad boy has 685.

I work in the city, and have been to quite a few restaurants in and around central London. This has to be by far the worst experience I have had so far. The service was rushed and the food was cold (and I didn't order cold meze either, it was supposed to be hot food). The cuts of meat used in the souvlaki were substandard, I don't think asking for edible, tender meat for £20 is unreasonable! It tasted burnt, yet still managed to arrive below room temperature. I mean, how difficult is it to get souvlaki right?

If you want to go out for a nice meal, then try La Chappelle, or St John, Rhodes 24 or any number of delightful pubs in the area. But steer well clear of The Real Greek. The name is deceptive, as it seemed neither real nor Greek (I used to live a block away from a real family run Greek place, and this place gives Greek restaurants a bad name).
