Square Meal Review of Texture (bar) ?

A chic showcase for the talents of award-winning sommelier & co-owner Xavier Rousset, Texture’s bar offers sleek comfort in natural tones. Champagne, which Rousset regards as ‘one of the most fascinating beverages in the world’, is the main draw, with a 100-strong list including five pourers alongside many satisfyingly obscure marques & a neat assortment of swish cocktails. Sparks of statement glamour, such as the ice buckets sunk deep into curvy tables, are matched by a few big-ticket wines on a fascinating, intelligently edited list that also allows room for plenty of fine ‘stickies’ & Madeiras. The bar shares its high, corniced ceilings & striking Nordic-themed art with the restaurant, which sends through offbeat bar snacks including bacon popcorn & crisp wafers of cod skin.

Ohmigod – courtesy of the Square Meal search facility we stumbled upon this as a place for pre-dinner drinks and were absolutely blown away by it. Just a beautiful room with the most gi-normous display of lillies I have ever seen anywhere. Their scent added to the really chilled out feeling you get on entering the bar – a wonderful and swift antidote to the stress of negotiating a path amongst the Oxford Street Saturday evening shoppers. Unfortunately we only had time for a glass of fizz, but will undoubtedly return to take advantage of possibly the most extensive champagne list I have ever seen. The staff were very professional and attentive, even though it was clear that we were en route elsewhere. Luckily our restaurant reservation was at le Gavroche otherwise we may have been kicking ourselves for not staying on for dinner in Texture. Will definitely return…soon!

The bar is essentially an entre into the fabulous restaurant but, with one of the finest champagne lists in London, is worth checking out for itself. High ceilinged, small but airy, with a great view of the 274 bus stop on Gloucester Place.

That is unfair: the best view is the list of fizz, which runs to a dozen or more pages, including all my favourites, and some that are new to me, but with which I will enjoy becoming well acquainted. The range runs from award winning English sparklers (a couple of lovely vintages of Nyetimber), through Austrian, Italian and regional French to Champagne itself. Oh and there are some classics from that fine region: from small, independent producers like Henri Giraud, Egley-Oriet and Jacquesson, through to the Grand Marques of Krug, Salon and Dom. A list compiled with love, devotion and no small degree of care.

The crowd is mixed: suits and pre-dinner lounging, and a pair of very loud trousers, with a voice to match, all sucking down bubbles and snarfing on the bacon pop corn and “crisps” from the restaurant next door. No mere Kettle Chips here. Oh no: crispy cod skin and parmesan crisps are the order of the evening.

Through the throng of it all sails the owner, Xavier, suavely French, unruffled by nervous waiters or loud trousers. You get the impression that, had he been on the Titanic, he would have been calmly handing out fizz to the band as the boat went down.
