There are few more promising perches for some high-profile socialising in the City than at the high chairs ranged around 1 Lombard Street’s bar – an elegantly alcoholic rotunda that takes centre stage beneath Pietro Agostini’s spectacular glazed dome. Graze on pigeon legs or arancini balls, nibble a club sandwich or tackle a curried fishcake while perusing the cocktail list: classic mai tais and Singapore slings share the billing with signature creations ranging from a saffron and passion fruit martini to the 1776 (made with elderflower liqueur, London dry gin and fresh pear juice). Otherwise, house wines, Prosecco and a couple of Champagnes are available by the glass. Buzzing at lunchtime, 1 Lombard Street is softer and more relaxed in the evening – although live jazz peps things up on alternate Friday nights.
