Ask for a whisky at Boisdale’s Macdonald Bar & they’ll hand you a weighty tome stuffed with more than 200 choices – from bog-standard Famous Grouse to a 1946 Macallan at £675 a glass. It’s an intimidating prospect (even for aficionados), although the catalogue is split into helpful sections covering different regions & producers with concise descriptions of each; the staff also know their Glenlivets from their Glenmorangies, & are more than happy to advise. If Scottish spirits aren’t your thing, there’s also an extensive selection of Champagnes, epic Bordeaux & Burgundies on the wine list, while sausage & mash, haggis & fishcakes provide the necessary sustenance. A long wooden bar & a green/red colour scheme give the place a vintage 1940s feel, helped along by nightly live jazz sessions.
