Minimal in style, with utility-style pendant lamps, & enticing hams in the window, this branch of Fernandez & Wells feeds office workers with very good sandwiches, salads & soups. It can be a squeeze in the evening, but worthwhile if you fancy sharing a bottle of Catalunyan Auzells with a plate of well-aged Bellota jamón or air-cured, oak-smoked cecina de Leon. Italian cured meats are a recent addition to the larder, cheeses come from equally eminent producers, & raclette is made from Somerset Ogleshield. Other hot dishes range from a Devon seafood plate to grilled loin of pork served with Manchego cheese. Two sibling cafés (on Beak Street & St Anne’s Court) are unlicensed & get going earlier for coffee & cake. All three are simple, charming, ‘great little neighbourhood places’.
