Early-evening sessions at the PoW are packed with a young, suited & booted Putney crowd enjoying a drink on the way home from work, often staying for a bite to eat. Service can be slow – the main bar gets crowded & the staff snowed under – but for a tasty pint (from Black Sheep to 1664) or classic cocktail, it’s probably worth the wait. The surroundings, either in the beer garden or the attractively gastro’d interior, make a pleasant backdrop for a chinwag. The kitchen is capable enough – oysters sold singly, or own-made Scotch eggs, make sound bar snacks; there’s gastropub fare for more formal meals (pumpkin soup with Parmesan croutons, steaks, & chilli squid noodle salad). The wine list is no great shakes: best walk 100 metres to Putney Station for a decent bottle.
