Square Meal review of The Warrington:
The Warrington’s pubby wood-panelled ground floor hasn’t been altered since it became the third link in Gordon Ramsay’s growing chain of gastropubs. Upstairs, however, it’s all change. The dining room has been opened up & is now a vibrant venue serving trademark Ramsay food. Unlike its staunchly trad-Brit siblings, The Narrow & The Devonshire, the menu strays into foreign waters: steak & kidney pie sits alongside steak tartare, & Cullen skink rubs shoulders with choucroute garni. It reads well, but the results are less assured. Dressed Cornish crab has excellent meat balanced with a delicate mayonnaise, grilled whole lemon sole shows off its pearly white flesh & full-flavoured roast baby chicken comes with all the trimmings. By contrast, salmon fishcake consisted largely of mashed potato, while Dedham Vale rib-eye steak was an unassailably tough number. Gordon Ramsay’s name above the door naturally raises expectations. Sadly, The Warrington lacks GR’s usual finesse, although brilliant, clued-up service almost saves the day.
