Square Meal Review of Market ?

No-nonsense simplicity sums up Market, both in terms of decor & food. Bare brick walls line the small room, chairs could have been reclaimed from a local school, & the zinc-topped tables are left unclothed. The menu is just as pared-down, dishes succinctly listed as ‘chicken, livers, green beans, soft egg’; ‘pollack, lentils, cockles, chorizo’; & ‘apple & cinnamon crumble’. Nothing more than the main ingredients is given away, but it’s safe to put your trust in the kitchen. The chefs know what they’re doing, turning out dishes brimming with gutsy, seasonal flavours. Sticking to the rule of quality not quantity, the wine list is short but clearly chosen by someone with nous, while pricing is pleasingly conservative. A lovely neighbourhood restaurant, although uninterested service attracts the odd disapproving comment.

Market offers excellent food and a decently sized menu, making it a real alternative for all those disappointed by the paucity of gastropubs in this part of Camden.

I am starting to feel quite fed up about paying for someone to cook incredibly average food and wishing I'd stayed at home. Going out to dinner should be a treat, but Sunday lunch at the Market certainly wasn't! My partner's roast beef was stone cold, and when we complained, it was simply shoved back in the microwave to be reheated for a couple of minutes – not what you would expect for £18 a dish. The vegeables were quite soggy, more what you would expect from a toby carvery. The waitress made a somewhat reluctant apology and no effort was made to make amends for this throughout the rest of the meal. The management of this place is obviously targetting the occasional tourist unlikely to return again, rather than creating a decent neighbourhood restaurant. We thought we'd have a change from the York & Albany up the road, but really wish we hadn't bothered – that's much better value, two beautifully cooked courses for £18.

I went with my wife – food was excellent with a decent choice of starters and mains (all English based). Starters were all about £5.50 – £7 and mains around the £12-£14 mark, which for very high quality cooking and substantial portions represents great value. Service was also prompt, efficient and friendly and even on a Wednesday night there was a lively vibe to the place. I will certainly return
