Square Meal review of Market:
This Camden newcomer is the latest London launch to sign up to the trend for no-frills British food. Co-owner & chef Dan Spence was formerly head chef at Medcalf & Market has a similarly fuss-free appeal. It’s a small, cosy site with blasted brick walls, zinc-topped tables & an open kitchen. Staff are well briefed on the comfort-food menu & execution is generally on the money: a rich, smooth chicken liver parfait arrived in a dinky Kilner jar alongside spiced plum chutney, while a main course of chicken & ham pie featured a buttery pastry crust & a creamy filling of leeks, salty ham & chunky pieces of chicken. To finish, jam pudding featured fine sponge & a dousing of light custard. On the drinks front, the short global wine list is, like the menu, reasonably priced. All in all, Market is not only somewhere that will raise Camden’s underperforming gastronomic game, it’s also a refreshing reminder that good food need not cost the earth.
