Market
No-nonsense simplicity sums up Market, both in terms of decor & food. Bare brick walls line the small room, chairs could have been reclaimed from a local school, & the zinc-topped tables are left unclothed. The menu is just as pared-down, dishes succinctly listed as ‘chicken, livers, green beans, soft egg’; ‘pollack, lentils, cockles, chorizo’; & ‘apple & cinnamon crumble’. Nothing more than the main ingredients is given away, but it’s safe to put your trust in the kitchen. The chefs know what they’re doing, turning out dishes brimming with gutsy, seasonal flavours. Sticking to the rule of quality not quantity, the wine list is short but clearly chosen by someone with nous, while pricing is pleasingly conservative. A lovely neighbourhood restaurant, although uninterested service attracts the odd disapproving comment.
