The Albert’s enduring popularity was bolstered by a recent refurb whose groovy decor pulled in a twentysomething crowd previously immune to the appeal of its former scruffy rock-pub pose. An open kitchen serving all-day gastro staples (bangers & mash, Caesar salad, tapas, mezze) helps matters, while a fantastic range of 21 draught beers & ciders includes anything from Franziskaner, Budvar Dark & Schneider Weisse to trad Young’s ales. Around two dozen wines, most available by the glass, kick off with Tempranillo, the entry-level red, at £10.50 – hardly Notting Hill 2008 prices. A sunny garden & the Gate Theatre directly above add extra value.
