Once upon a time this drinking den was favoured by Smithfield Market's beefiest porters, but this handsome Victorian boozer is now squarely aimed at those in a higher income bracket. The package consists of ‘hops, chops, cuvées and duvets' (there are six luxury bedrooms upstairs). ‘Hops' are represented by trendy bottled brews (including the likes of London Fields, Chalky's Bark and Mad Goose) and real ale served in old-fashioned tankards, while ‘cuvées' means a varied selection of around 80 global wines. Burgers and ‘City boy breakfasts' are the big foodie hits, though posher (and pricier) pub grub such as treacle-cured salmon, potted duck and fish stew is a better fit for the wood panels, leather banquettes and ‘restaurant-level' attention to detail.
