‘Hops, chops, cuvées & duvets’ is the mission statement for the Fox & Anchor – a Smithfield boozer that’s been kitted out with a few luxury bedroom suites with help from its neighbour, the louche Malmaison hotel. The pub itself, however, remains a stolid old-stager, with racing-green leather banquettes, smoky wood panelling & sepia-tinted photos of the meat market from days gone by. Head to the antiquated back rooms if you’re after some capably rendered, stomach-filling gastropub fodder: burgers are ‘a couple of cuts above the average’, & the menu also runs from a no-nonsense all-day ‘City boy breakfast’ to terrific pies & mutton shank with broad beans & tomato. The food is matched by an enviable arsenal of draught ales dispensed in pewter tankards, although prices aren’t quite so down-to-earth.
