Mississippi steamboat meets speakeasy at Mary Janes, where buttoned leather, gothic panelling & elaborate Victorian lighting combine with sultry colours to telling theatrical effect. At lunchtime there’s a full menu, taking in everything from salads, wraps & steak sarnies to ‘proper food’ such as teriyaki pork belly with wasabi mash; in the evening burgers, ‘thin & crispy’ pizzas, platters & nibbles keep the hunger pangs at bay. Cocktails range from bellinis & margaritas to milkshake martinis or the cider-apple sling made with Eristoff vodka, apple schnapps, apple juice & cider. Shooters come in sweetshop flavours, wines are pitched firmly at affordable partying, & there are plenty of cost-cutting promos, from a 5-8pm happy hour to £2.95 mojitos on Wednesdays. Occasional DJs, too.
