Square Meal review of Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester: Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester review

The name of Alain Ducasse above the door should guarantee that the capital’s committed foodies will be beating a path to the new dining room at The Dorchester, where the French superchef has added a UK outpost to his global portfolio of restaurants. They’ll find a spacious room tastefully done out in shades of beige & food that is as technically accomplished as it is enjoyable. To start, ‘squid bonbons’ involve parcels of crunchy vegetables encased in thin strips of squid, while main courses include a succulent poached Landes chicken breast in a sumptuously rich Albufera sauce of truffle, mushroom, Madeira & foie gras. Presentation is superb: the selection of cheeses & chutneys arrives on a china tray, each served in its own compartment. The downside, unsurprisingly, is prices – £75 for the three-course a la carte & £115 for the seven-course tasting menu – which seem unnecessarily steep, particularly given that the language limitations of some of the staff can lead to glitches in service. A three-course lunch for £35 (which can be served within an hour) offers a cheaper way in.

Chef: Alain Ducasse

Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester's Chef -

Having previously been involved with two restaurants in London – Monte’s & Spoon at the Sanderson – Alain Ducasse returned to the capital to launch Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester at the end of last year. With executive chef Jocelyn Herland (ex-Marco Pierre White’s three-starred Oak Room) heading up the 80-seat restaurant, it’s already being tipped for three stars. Ducasse’s career is formidable – he has spent time working with some of France’s greats including Michel Guèrard, Roger Vergé & Alain Chapel. Today, Ducasse’s group boasts 12 Michelin stars &, until he closed Alain Ducasse at the Essex House in New York, he was the most feted chef by Michelin, ever. Today, his global star power matches that of Gordon Ramsay, but as neither party plans to stand still, the search for the ultimate Michelin man will no doubt continue.
