Duke of Sussex

After years in culinary exile, the elaborately Victorian Duke of Sussex has been fabulously restored to join Chiswick’s gastro-aristocracy. With ornate glass chandeliers now hanging from the high ceilings & black-&-white shots of old Chiswick in mismatched gold frames adorning its mocha walls, what was an underwhelming football pub is now drawing crowds for its simple but delicious grub. The Anglo-Spanish food is seasonal & rustic, suiting the laid-back, deliberately unstuffy mood: think faggots, devilled sprats, Andalusian garlic soup (complete with soft poached egg) & a rich, peppery fabada (butter bean, pork & bacon stew). The menu changes daily, so expect stews & game in winter & lighter summer fare to promote the large beer garden. Specialising in real ales & well-priced Old World wine (mostly also available by the carafe), you get the feeling the old Duke himself would be raising a glass.
