Square Meal Review of Marco ?

At a time when Marco Pierre White is more synonymous with steakhouses than culinary trailblazing, this Stamford Bridge restaurant is as close as he comes to a flagship site, with a menu that knows how to deliver on pure indulgence. Tuna carpaccio is a suitably light option to start, with diners advised to save space for the gutsy, rich mains: from Dover sole with béarnaise sauce to rack of lamb with dauphinoise potatoes, it’s time to put diets on hold & treat yourself to some Gallic clout. If there’s room, pair an English pud such as Eton mess with one of the dessert wines, in preparation for a hefty bill. On match days, the spot takes on a different complexion, as an abridged menu aims to service supporters with speed & style.

I was a little bit unsure of the menu to begin with. It was a little on the heavy side and apart from the Beef and Tuna for maincourses the rest of the selection was a slightly limited. The bottle of Vin de Pays red wine was great value and perfectly complimented the steak and liver which we had for mains. Again I was a little disappointed with the starter – my boston style oyster cocktail was too sweet for my liking, almost a little like tomato ketchup, but the potted duck (…well duck terrine) was good. The liver and bacon which followed was superbly rich and tasty, and so was the 16oz T-Bone Steak. The naughty Cambridge Cream (Créme Brulée) which we had to finish the meal was lovely, even despite slightly burnt caramelised topping. The service was incredible, attentive without being too attentive. The atmosphere was smart, trendy, but friendly. Ideally, this restaurant is more aimed towards groups of men – which is no surprise seeing as it's located next to Chelsea's stadium. It is definitely worth a try.

On the whole jolly good, but the service, which was impeccable, was a little let down by the menu. The menu for me was a little brief and tended towards a brassiere where the service tended toward that of a stared restaurant.

Was surprised that the experience we had was not up to the usual standard of a MPW linked venue.

The service was indifferent. Arrived and greeted and taken to the bar which was a good start – but then had to find staff to let them know we were ready to eat.
Taken to a noisy part of the room – table way too small for 4 people though seating in a curved bonquette was good.

waited too long for starter – had to ask for bread which came towards the end as whole table just about finishing their first course

scallops and black pudding great . staek and kidney pudding outstanding – does not need an accompaniment.
wine good but not great for the price.

dessert took 15 mins – we were warned – and when came was worth it. good souffle

Am afraid i woudl not rush back mainly because the price deserves better service – though would happily eat the food again – just somewhere else

    Marco Pierre White

The tousle-haired firebrand & enfant terrible of the 1980s restaurant scene is in resurgent form these days. Marco Pierre White's TV career is on the up, thanks to his appearances as front man on Hell's Kitchen in 2007, followed by Marco's Great British Feast a year later; further shows, including Kitchen Burnout are in the pipeline. The first British chef to be awarded three Michelin stars, he has worked for some of the godfathers of British cooking; Albert Roux, Pierre Koffmann & Raymond Blanc. In 1987 he opened Harvey's, a culinary stud farm that produced Gordon Ramsay & Philip Howard among others, & won two Michelin stars. After relocating to Le Meridien Piccadilly he gained a third star before hanging up his whites in 1999. He owns a clutch of restaurants, including The Criterion, his Frankie's chain of Italian pizzerias (run in partnership with jockey Frankie Dettori), & Marco, which opened in Chelsea's Stamford Bridge football stadium in 2007. He is also expanding his gastropub portfolio outside the capital.
